Every product sold on manob.ai includes baseline licensing terms automatically. You can expand these with custom terms, but these defaults cover most scenarios:

Non-exclusive licensing

By default, we don't require exclusivity. You can sell the same asset on ThemeForest, your own website, or anywhere else. Buyers get a license to use your asset, not exclusive rights to it.

This benefits sellers (multi-platform revenue) and buyers (competitive pricing since you're not locked to one marketplace).

Ownership retention

You retain full ownership and copyright of your work. Buyers purchase a license to use your asset under specified terms, not ownership transfer.

This is standard for marketplaces but worth emphasizing: Selling a $49 WordPress theme doesn't transfer your intellectual property rights to the buyer.

Commercial use permission

All our listings default to commercial use permitted unless you explicitly restrict it. Buyers can use purchased assets in client projects, commercial websites, products they're building, etc.

Why default to commercial permitted? Because restricting commercial use dramatically limits your market. Most buyers want commercial rights, and prohibiting commercial use cuts potential sales by 60-80%.

Modification rights

Buyers can modify purchased assets to suit their needs. This covers customization, adaptation, and integration into larger projects.

In the AI era, this implicitly includes AI-assisted modifications unless you explicitly prohibit them (more on this later).

No redistribution

Buyers cannot resell your assets as-is or in slightly modified form. They can't bundle your WordPress theme into a "100 themes" collection and sell it. They can't offer your React components as their own product.

This is the core protection for digital asset sellers. Use is permitted. Redistribution is not.

What the defaults DON'T cover:

AI training dataset inclusion (not permitted by default, must be explicitly allowed)

The case for permitting AI training (with conditions):

Some buyers legitimately want to train internal AI tools on codebases that include your assets. For example, a company building an internal AI coding assistant trained on their own codebase, which happens to include components they purchased from you.

Prohibiting all AI training might eliminate legitimate use cases. Consider permitting it with restrictions:

Licensing language: "AI training usage is permitted only for internal, non-commercial AI tools. This asset may not be included in datasets for commercial AI products or publicly available AI models without separate written agreement."

Our recommendation:

Most sellers should prohibit AI training by default unless buyers specifically request it and negotiate separate terms. Why? Because the value proposition isn't clear yet.

When someone buys your React component for $39, they're paying for usage rights in their projects. If they want training data rights for a commercial AI product, that's a different value tier—they should be paying significantly more.

Separate your pricing:

Standard license: $39-89, usage rights, no AI training

AI training license: $500-2,000+, includes dataset inclusion rights for commercial AI products

Most sellers will never sell an AI training license—and that's fine. Having the option clarifies that standard licenses DON'T include it.

What Terms Should You Set for AI-Assisted Modifications?

AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, and Midjourney are now standard workflow tools. Buyers will use them to modify your assets. The question isn't whether to allow this—it's how to handle ownership and attribution.

Our recommended approach:

Permit AI-assisted modifications under existing modification rights

Treat AI as a tool, like Photoshop or a code editor. When buyers modify your work using AI assistance, it's still a modification covered by standard modification rights.

Licensing language: "You may modify this asset using any tools including AI-assisted editing, code generation, or design tools. AI-assisted modifications are subject to the same terms as manual modifications."

Clarify that derivative works don't transfer your copyright

When buyers create derivatives (with or without AI), they own the derivative but your original work remains yours. The AI-generated modifications are their work, but the foundation is still licensed from you.

Licensing language: "Derivative works created from this asset (including AI-assisted derivatives) are owned by the licensee, but do not grant rights to the original asset beyond the terms of this license. The licensee cannot redistribute the original asset or derivatives that substantially reproduce the original."

Address attribution for heavily modified works

If your asset is 80% transformed by AI, attribution becomes impractical. Consider making attribution optional for substantial transformations.

Licensing language: "Attribution is required for use of this asset in substantially unmodified form. For derivative works where the original asset comprises less than 30% of the final work, attribution is appreciated but not required."

Set boundaries on AI output redistribution

Buyers can use AI to modify your asset for their projects. They cannot use AI to mass-generate variations of your asset and sell those variations as products.

Document your work for provenance

Keep timestamped records of your original work. If you later discover AI models generating outputs suspiciously similar to your assets, documented provenance helps establish unauthorized training.

What you CAN'T do:

You can't prevent all unauthorized AI scraping. If your asset is viewable online, determined actors can include it in training datasets. This isn't unique to AI—unauthorized redistribution has always been a risk with digital assets.

The goal isn't perfect prevention (impossible). The goal is:

Clear licensing terms for legitimate buyers

Reasonable technical barriers to casual scraping

Documentation for potential legal action if necessary

Most buyers respect licensing terms. Clear AI-era terms ensure those legitimate buyers know exactly what's permitted.

Should You Offer Extended Licenses for AI Use Cases?

Many marketplaces offer "extended licenses" for use cases beyond standard terms. ThemeForest charges 10-50x more for extended licenses allowing SaaS usage or resale contexts.

AI use cases might justify similar extended licensing:

MIT License and similar permissive licenses

These typically allow nearly unrestricted use, including commercial use and modification. Do they implicitly allow AI training? Legal experts disagree.

GPL and copyleft licenses
